Love and hate are equal emotions.
It’s down to us to define them.
CHAPTER ONE
COLBY
Playing mind games with Willow feels good.
Sadistically good. It fuels me and makes me feel alive—something I haven’t felt in so long, and if I’m being honest with myself, which I don’t usually do, I just can’t get enough.
I thought Willow would have upped and left Redlake by now, but she’s still here and it would be rude to let this twisted opportunity slip through my wicked fingers. I’ve never been a believer in fate, but going back to how we used to be, or where we left off never felt so good—or so right.
This hate game that Willow and I have going on is exactly what I need right now. A welcome distraction. Food for my dark and corrupt soul.
It’s just a real shame Tiffanie had to go and turn up and ruin the moment, because whether Willow wants to admit it or not, I had her right where I fucking wanted her—trapped under my spell and I knew she couldn’t get enough of it—enough of me.
I guess I should have seen it coming. I should have kept my head in the game and been more alert. I should have known Tiffanie could become quite the problem, and I’m not in a position where I can allow myself to get too distracted. I need to stay sharp, keep a clear head, and remember that even though it was initially against my will, Tiffanie is here with me, and I also need to remember why.
Sure, the tables may well have turned and landed in my favor, but Tiffanie doesn’t need to know about any of that. My business is exactly that—my business, and it’s not something she needs to concern herself with. No, what she needs to do is concentrate on staying in the fake little bubble she’s created for herself. That way, life would be sweet for the both of us.
“Well?”
The sound of Tiffanie’s demanding voice pierces my ears and I’m forced to look at her. I find her positioned at my desk, in my chair, acting all high and mighty and she looks beyond pissed. Fuck, is there anything of mine she doesn’t want to claim as her own?
“Well, what?” I bark back, and I’m in no mood for her childish games. But I know Tiffanie, and I roll my eyes and cross my heavily tattooed arms over my chest, bracing myself for what’s to come. I know full well this is going to be one long ass night. And I’m going to take a wild guess and say Willow will no doubt be the hot topic of conversation for the foreseeable.
“I said why was she in here?” The accusation pours out in her words. She doesn’t need to say it because I already know what she’s trying to imply, but I’m not about to start answering. It’s not my fault if Tiff has major daddy issues, but she sure as hell needs to start working on her insecurities. That’s her shit to deal with, not mine. And I’ve never answered to another chick in my goddamn life so why the fuck would I start now? Especially to the dramatic demands of Tiffanie Melrose. The stupid girl might think she has some kind of hold over me, but she couldn’t be more wrong.
I’m not stupid. I knew the questions would start rolling in thick and fast the second Willow dragged the office door open and I saw the savage look on Tiffanie’s overly enhanced face. So, she might be hurting, but that doesn’t mean I’m about to sit back and have a heart to heart with the chick.
If anything, I personally thought the whole scene was pretty damn entertaining. Tiffanie looked wild with rage, while Willow looked guilty and flustered—like she’s just had the fuck of her life, and that only heightened my arousal. I’m a sick son of a bitch and I’ll never apologize for it either.
Willow may well hate me, but that doesn’t change the fact she’s desperate for me too.
As my right-hand man Ryder once told me, hate only fuels the passion and going off our history and previous experience, hate and passion with Willow and I go hand in hand.
I can still feel the heat of Tiffanie’s gaze burning into me, and fuck if it doesn’t piss me off even more.
“What is it that you want from me?” I demand. “Do you want me to tell you everything you don’t want to hear? That I had her body pinned up against that door while I fucked every last inch of her? Do you want me to tell you that while you were at the bar Willow was busy on her knees, sucking my cock better than you ever could?”
I throw my head back and laugh as a sharp hiss escapes her lips and I know I’ve hit her where it hurts. Tiffanie wasn’t expecting me to say any of that. No, Tiffanie expected me to do what I have always done with her—pander to her needs and tell her everything she’s ever wanted to hear. And I only did that for an easy life, to keep the peace. But I don’t need to do that anymore. I’m a free fucking man, and Colby Carter is well and truly back in the game.
Things have changed—dramatically, and we’re not on Tiffanie’s territory anymore. Redlake is my playground and I no longer need to worry about keeping her sweet. I can tell her anything I want to now. I can treat her anyway I like and there’s not a goddamn thing she can do about it.
Not now. Not ever, and the taste of freedom and revenge never tasted so good.
I mean, what’s poor little rich bitch Tiffanie Melrose going to do if she doesn’t like it? Call daddy? I sure hope she does because then that son of a bitch will have to come to me, and it will be game on.
“Excuse me.” Tiffanie asks after a few moments of silence while she processes what I’ve just said to her. Then she leans forward over the desk, a look of superior on her face while her fake titties pour out of her skimpy designer dress. Most guys would find her sexy. Hey, I’ve fallen victim to her before—that’s how this fucked up situation started, but now all she does is disgust me. More than I actually thought possible.
Running the pad of my thumb over my lips I narrow my eyes and walk toward the desk, making sure I keep my eyes fixed on hers. Her shoulders drop as I get closer and I can tell she’s not feeling as confident as she did a few moments ago.
Her chest rises and falls rapidly with each step I take, and her mouth opens as though she’s ready to say something to me, but I don’t let that deter me from my destination.
I soon come to a halt and lean over the desk, bringing my face so close to hers that our noses touch and her breathing falters. “Oh, you heard what I said, now get the fuck out of my chair, and my office.”
Tiffanie’s eyes sparkle with warning and a devilish grin dances on her lips as she says, “Colby, baby. I don’t think it’s wise for you to start playing games, do you?”
Bless her little soul. This silly little whore actually thinks she’s giving me a fair warning, and it’s a real shame she doesn’t know it, but her threat is emptier than my soul.
“No?” I laugh back, deciding it will be much more enjoyable to play along. I never thought I’d have fun playing with Tiffanie, but what do you know? Deano isn’t going to do shit to me now, so I may as well get my full use out of her before I send her packing. “And what are you going to do exactly? In case you hadn’t noticed daddy-dearest isn’t around to help you.”
At that, Tiffanie throws her head back as an evil cackle emanates from her mouth. I won’t lie, under different circumstances I’d be impressed. Who knew she’d be capable of having a wicked side—one to match my own? Her laugh is a sound of pure evil—soul-destroying and I have no doubt it would have the ability to suck the life out of anyone within hearing distance. I guess I’m safe because I don’t have a soul, but that’s a different story altogether. However, my dick twitches at the possibilities of our new roles. Tiffanie is now the pawn in my game and not her daddy’s.
Revenge is sweet and it will be mine.
“Really?” She asks and pulls me out of my thoughts. “After all
this time? Damn, Colby. You really are just a pretty face after all, huh?” I watch as Tiffanie pushes down on her hands and gracefully lifts her body while her cold icy-blue eyes burn into mine. She’s trying her damned hardest to intimidate me—to get the upper hand. God sure loves a tryer. I guess that’s the only difference between me and the big man. But it doesn’t matter because try as she might, Tiffanie Melrose can’t intimidate anyone. “You haven’t learned a damn thing. All that time with my father, and for what?” Tiffanie laughs some more and I’m more than happy to wait it out while she says exactly what’s on her mind. “Do you really think I need my father to fight my battles? Obviously, your eyes haven’t been on the prize at all. But let me tell you this: if you want a war on your hands then so be it. That’s your problem, and yours alone—but you’ll never win Colby. Not with me, or my father, so if I were you, I’d hurry up and sort your shit out. Oh, and don’t go making any quick decisions.”
Wow. Tiffanie is so convinced with what she’s saying that I’m intrigued. So much so that I settle myself down on the edge of the desk, eager to hear the rest of the bullshit ready and waiting for fall from her mouth. This kind of entertainment is priceless and not something you come by every day.
“But, I like you Colby. Enough to give you a little heads up because believe it or not, I’m actually quite nice to those who I care about.”
“Shoot.” I can’t hold back my smile any longer. Man, I can’t believe Tiffanie thinks she has the power or goddamn right to give me advice. What an absolute douche. I mean the girl can barely wipe her own ass. I guess she should have taken her balls and left them with her father—because he’s going to need them more than she ever will.
“All right, I’ll get straight to the point. I want you to stay the hell away from Willow. Oh, and I’m not asking you. I’m telling you. And if you don’t want to play ball then I’ll make sure you live to regret it.”
I breathe in a sharp lungful of air and assess her some more. Surely I didn’t just hear her right. I couldn’t have heard her right. Surely Tiffanie wouldn’t be dumb enough to start telling me what I can or can’t do. That would be a fool’s game and she sure as hell knows it too.
She has to be shitting me. Not only does she sound like a total douche, but I can tell she’s trying way too hard to act like her dad, and she’s failing miserably. It also isn’t a look that looks good on her either.
I’m not surprised that just like Deano, her words hold zero conviction. She’s fucking laughable right now and I don’t know whether to give her a pat on the back for effort or if I should feel sorry for her.
“Look, Tiff.” I sigh heavily as I drag my hand sown my stubbled jaw, wondering why this whole crazy ass situation isn’t over and done with by now. It seems no matter what I do, how I try to approach this bullshit, I just keep falling deeper and deeper into the ground. “Redlake is my home, not yours. All these people you see around here are my family and friends—the family I chose, not yours. If I want to stay here, then I will. If I want to fuck Willow then I’ll sure as hell do it, with or without your permission. I get to do what I want and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it. And know this; once I’m done with Willow, you can bet your ass I’ll be climbing back into bed with you, and sure, you might be pissed with me at first but we both know you can’t resist me. You’re too desperate and you’ll let me fuck you too—with Willow’s juices still fresh on my cock. Believe it or not Tiff, you want me. You always have and you’ll stop at nothing to have me—even if that means sharing.” I laugh a little and I can’t help it because I know I’m right. “You and I both know it doesn’t matter what I do or don’t do, you’ll always want me—because you’re desperate for someone to want you. For anyone to show you all the attention that daddy never could.”
My voice is flat as I deliver home truth after home truth to Tiffanie and there’s not an ounce of remorse in my body, because finally, for the first time since she stormed into my life, I can tell her exactly how it is.
No false pretenses.
No fucking bullshit.
Just good old home truths, and I couldn’t give a damn if she doesn’t like it. She knows where the door is, and it’s wide open if she wants to leave. But she won’t.
“Colby…” Tiffanie’s eyes burn into mine and I know she’s upset, but that isn’t my problem anymore. She can cry all she likes, but it won’t change a damn thing.
“So, you missed out on daddy being around while you were growing up. I get it. Really, I do. But whatever happened in your life before me isn’t my problem, or my burden to carry. If you need someone to look after you, make sure you’re okay, be your daddy—I’m sorry Tiff, but that guy won’t ever be me. We were only supposed to be fun—but I don’t feel the fun anymore.”
I watch her body shake and judder as she tries to control her emotions and I feel empty. There’s no denying that this chick looks crushed—all because of me, and I feel nothing. It’s official. My soul is blacker than Satan’s and I’ll never be ashamed of it.
I totally get she’s been dragged up and cast to the side—probably cared for by whoever was screwing Deano at the time, and I totally understand her hunger to be loved and wanted. I’m just not the right guy for the job. I just can’t give her the love or the life she’d want. And no matter how much she tries to tame me it won’t happen because I’m no one’s to own. I’m not a fucking pet.
“Colby, baby.” Tiffanie’s voice is softer this time, and she seems to have backed down from her territorial stance, but it still doesn’t change anything.
“Don’t, Tiff.” I reply more sternly than I intended but it’s been a long ass day and the sooner she hears this, the better. I’m firm and clear, like I have been over a hundred times before, “I’ve always been upfront with you. I told you right from the get-go that you didn’t want to get involved with me because you’d only end up with a broken heart. I don’t do relationships, Tiff. I never have and I never will. I’m a lone soldier, and my path is mine alone.”
“No. You’re different with her.”
“Her?” I question and I have no idea where this stupid conversation is headed. Actually, I don’t know where anything is headed with Tiffanie because she’s so fucking unpredictable. She makes my head hurt.”
“Oh, look at you trying to act all dumb. I’m talking about that stupid bitch who just walked out of here.”
“Willow?” Her name leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth, but Tiffanie doesn’t need to know that. This jealous streak she’s got going on looks pretty damn hot on her, and my balls are fucking bluer than the ocean. “I didn’t fuck Willow.” I tell her truthfully. Not that I owe her an explanation because I don’t. “But tell me, what would it matter if I did? You and I,” I waggle my finger between us, so she understands. “we’re not exclusive. We’re just two people who fuck from time to time. Our only connection is your father—that’s it.”
And I believe the correct version of events is that I used to do business with her father. But not anymore. He may not know it yet, but I’m no longer Deano Melrose’s bitch. Again, Tiffanie doesn’t need to know or worry herself with the minor details.
“You’re an ass, Colby Carter.” She hurls back at me and a tumbler flies passed my ear, missing it by an inch and shatters into a thousand pieces as it smashes against the wall.
“Is that supposed to be an insult?” I can’t help but goad her some more. I’ve been called far worse over the years, that’s for sure. I guess I can’t blame her for lashing out. Tiffanie’s nothing more than a stupid pawn in her father’s games. She’s nothing more than a stupid rich bitch with damaged feelings. I’ve warned her time and time again, her issues are not my problem. I’ve enough baggage of my own to deal with without adding hers to the masses. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
Tiffanie finally stands and makes her way to the door before she suddenly stops and turns to face me. “This is far from over, Colby.” She warns me and her eyes haze over, and once again I feel a whole ounce of nothing. “I didn’t come all the way here with you just to be pushed to the side whenever you feel like it.”
